Character Sheet:
Fox Spirit

2020
Clip Studio Paint; Watercolor, light pencil

This is the first character sheet that I did for my main character, Ruo. Before this, I had several designs that were unfinalized. These designs were based off of a character that I had created in an MMORPG. I decided to use those designs as the basis for this character sheet assignment in my 2-D art-making course.

Before, I had just drawn the character as a part feline part human hybrid, so I needed to add some depth. I decided to reference the nine-tailed fox and the fox spirit from ancient Chinese mythology. I created three versions of him, the nine-tailed fox hybrid form that shows his full power, the one-tailed fox spirit form as a toned down version, and a full human form that he uses to blend in with modern humans. For the fox hybrid versions, I referenced a traditional Chinese outfit known as “hanfu,” which you usually see in historical Chinese dramas and animations. I also gave my character long hair to go with the attire while he is in that form. For the modern human version, I wanted to emphasize contrast so I drew him in modern street wear. The necklace is supposed to be a magical item that gives him his human disguise only while he’s wearing it. Later, I created different versions of him for different occasions such as the Circus Collab and the Art-based Roleplay.

Intersection

2021
Rough Wash

This illustration is inspired by my own Asian American identity. It is a literal intersection of two planes. The one on the top is downtown LA-inspired architecture, while the one on the bottom is inspired by LA’s Chinatown. Both of these architectural styles are located in the same city but have vastly different styles and cultures.

Although I live outside of the main city, I used to visit downtown LA with my dad, who would go to Chinatown to visit this one bookstore often. I have also visited museums in LA, such as LACMA(LA County Museum of Art) and the Broad. I can say that both portions of LA are a part of my identity as an Asian American, but also as an artist.

In my formal art training, I have been encouraged to practice a style that is mainly western and mostly learned about western art history. Thus, I had to turn to the internet to find online Asian artists and study their art styles so that I could integrate those techniques into my work. In a way, I wanted my art to be at the intersection of eastern and western culture, like the illustration implies.

The digital art section showcases the product of my own exploration with a focus on character design and illustration. Much of these works are aesthetic based, stylized, and imaginative rather than real life based. This section in particular will exhibit works of a variety of aesthetics, rather than a consistent style.
